This Explorer Orange & Rosé 6-bottle set features six absolutely delicious bottles of wine that we highly recommend. You’ll explore three delicious rosés from New York’s North Fork on Long Island, Corsica, and Croatia. And three orange wines that could not be more different from each other, from Greece’s Peloponnese Peninsula, Washington State’s Colombia Valley, and Chile’s Maule Valley. These wines are perfect for Summer, and we know you're going to be thrilled to make their acquaintance.

What the heck is an orange wine? Not all orange wines are orange in color. It is a name for the category of wines where light-skinned grapes’ skins are used in the winemaking process (just like rosé from a dark-skinned grape.) Simply put, it’s a “non-interventionist” style of wine-making that involves light-skinned grapes being left to ferment on their own, with the skins and seeds in a large inert vessel such as ceramic or terracotta and often with the assistance of oxygen that contributes to the wines’ orange-like color. Often these wines are made as natural as possible. This style of wine was born centuries ago in the country of Georgia where it still reigns supreme and is experiencing quite a renaissance with today’s explorer seeking wine consumers in pursuit of something new, natural, and intriguing. This is such a great set!

Our Explorer level delivers sommelier-curated wines that will introduce you to different grape varieties, styles, and/or regions from around the World. Each bottle of wine we offer is hand-selected for taste and quality. These wines deliver incredible value and do not need to be further aged to taste their best. Hurry—the wines we select are only available in small quantities, and once they’re gone, they’re gone. That’s the whole point of the explorer set—to keep trying new wines to expand one’s tasting experiences.

Wines included in this set:

2021 Troupis, Hoof & Lur, Moschofilero, Arcadia, Greece

Moschofilero 100%

Located in the heart of the Peloponnese Peninsula and surrounded by tall mountains, which influence the region’s cooler climate and distinguishes it from the rest of the Peloponnese. The harvest is one of the latest in the Peloponnese and, depending on the year, can extend into mid-November. It is here that the colored variety of Moschofilero ripens quite late, usually at some point in mid-October, yielding low-alcohol, white (blanc-de-gris), intensely aromatic wines. Troupis is a traditional Greek family whose winemaking history dates back to the 1970s. They produce and bottle wine exclusively from their estate vineyards located 700 feet asl. This crisp brightly colored Moschofilero is fermented on the skins in stainless steel tank. it is highly aromatic with concentrated notes of nectarine, tangerine, apricots, roses, violets, and spices and all wrapped up in a bone dry palate with medium-body, light texture, and mouthwatering acidity.

2021 Sonder, Orange Field Blend, Colombia Valley, Washington

90% Viognier, 10% Marsanne and Roussanne

Driven by simplicity & authenticity, Sonder strives to make "lo-fi wines that showcase each vineyard and the different punches mother nature throws. ” These grapes were grown specifically with skin contact in mind, with healthy canopies and minimal leafing to keep the fruit shaded so it retains its acidity so it is bright and juicy. Grapes were picked in the middle of October when they were ripe enough to give flavors of stone fruit and orange zest while being picked early enough to keep the acidity refreshing and vibrant. The juice was fermented on the skins for 6 weeks and then aged in neutral French puncheons with weekly batonnage. 10% direct pressed Viognier added to fermentation to add brightness and vibrancy.

2021 Gonzalez Bastias, Naranjo, Maule Valley, Chile

40% Pink Moscatel, 40% Torantel, 20% País

This is a highly-rated vibrant orange wine made from a blend of 200 year-old vines of Torontel, Moscatel, and País. The fruit is macerated with skins for 60 days in the traditional style of this region. Despite its relatively long skin-contact, this wine exhibits wonderful finesse in its flavour and structure. The nose is aromatic with notes of tangerine, tropical fruits, plantains, aromatic white flowers. The palate is light and fresh, with a well-balanced texture – body without too much grip. A killer pairing with spicy food, sweet and sour dishes.

2022 Channing Daughters, Rosato di Merlot, North Fork, New York

Merlot

Channing Daughters creates wines from over two-dozen grape varieties on a 28-acre plot of land in Bridgehampton, on the South Fork of Long Island’s East End. The sculpture gardens featuring larger than life works by Walter Channing within over 100 acres of conserved land. Walter and his wife Molly began working with the Peconic Land Trust in the early 1990s on conservation initiatives that protected nearly 60 acres between 1993 and 2007. These acres, including vines, meadows, and woodland are located within an area that includes an additional 48 acres of agricultural reserve and open space protected by the Town of Southampton. Walter passed in 2015 and Molly, along with their daughters — Francesca, Isabella, Sylvia and Nina — continues to care for and nurture the land, including intense and careful culture of its vines and handpicking all grapes. Small and unique vineyard lots of grapes are fermented and bottled separately. All wine is gravity bottled. This rosé is a light shallot skin pale pink color, with notes of red plum, strawberries, red apple skin, red cherries, spice and minerals...persistent finish, and a wonderful zing. 198 cases made.

2022 Domaine Poli, Niellucciu, Ile de Beauté, Corsica

100% Niellucciu

The name Eric Poli is almost synonymous with Corsican wine. In addition to working as director at Domaine de Piana (his family’s 75-acre estate on Corsica’s East Coast), he also makes the wines for his wife’s family estate—Clos Teddi, and Clos Alivu. In 2005 Eric bought 7.4 acres of old-vine Niellucciu (Sangiovese) and Vermentino in the heart of Patrimonio (the oldest appellation on the mountainous island of Corsica) + 108 acres just outside his hometown of Linguizzetta, and established Domaine Poli. Eric farms his vines organically. This medium bodied rosé was made from 50 year-old vines and 100% estate grown Niellucciu from the Ile de Beauté IGP. The grapes were vinified in the traditional saignée method, in stainless steel, and with malolactic fermentation. We recently poured this wine on our Mediterranean wine sail and it was a CROWD PLEASER! It is so very delcious and precise with penetrating and pungent herbal scents of thyme and lavender with ripe white peach and pink grapefruit on a refreshing mineral-driven palate.

2022 Pomalo, Frankovka Rosé, Slavonija, Croatia

100% Frankovka (aka Blaufrankisch)

On the same latitude of Italy and similarly diverse and mountainous, Croatia has been produced wine for centuries. They were particularly devastated by phylloxera in the late 19th Century. As were many of their indigenous grape varieties. It is estimated that only about 130 of 250 indigenous Croatian wine grape varieties are grown today by about 1600 wine producers averaging ~4 acres each. We fell head over heels for this wine the moment we tasted it. The palate is fresh, vibrant, bright, and effortlessly pleasing with a nose that is bursting with juicy and ripe red berry fruits, particularly strawberries and raspberries, and floral aromas. It’s dry, light-bodied, with refreshing acidity.
