2016 Capezzana, Villa di Capezzana, Carmignano

80% Sangiovese, 20%, Cabernet Sauvignon

In the Montalbano hills west of Florence lies the little-known appellation of Carmignano. Evidence of winemaking dates back to 804 AD, and vines were imported from France since the 14th C (well before the arrival of the “Super-Tuscans”). The estate of Capezzana has consistently produced wines of great structure, finesse, and longevity. The 2016 growing season was a "perfect" vintage for this flagship wine. It’s dark ruby with notes of ripe black cherries, raspberries, currants, violets, dried leaves, cedar, spices, and minerals. It is all in balance with a full body, richness of high tannins, and high acidity that brings ample elegance to the palate through a long and savory finish. 4,500 cases made and 1,000 cases imported.

2017 Carpineto, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva

90% Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese Grosso), 10% Canaiolo

Named for the Renaissance town of Montepulciano, where this wine was originally produced for the "noble" aristocratic families. In 1967, Giovanni Carlo Sacchet and Antonio Mario Zaccheo set out to revolutionize wine here and produce a Sangiovese-based wine that would rival Chianti Classico. This wine is produced from fruit hand-harvested estate fruit and aged in Slavonian and French oak barrels for 18-24 months + 12 months in bottle. It’s ruby red and bone dry with notes of ripe and savory red and black cherries, berries, and plum with tomato leaf, black pepper, wild herbs, violets, tobacco, leather, sandalwood, ample wet earth, and dried leaves. Balanced with medium+ structure across the board—acidity, body, and fine tannins. Lots of depth and complexity.

2016 Selvapiana, Bucerchiale, Chianti Rufina Riserva

100% Sangiovese

Bucerchiale is Selvapiana's flagship wine, a Riserva-level Chianti Rùfina crafted from the grapes of the estate's best vineyard, Bucerchiale. Francesco Giuntini, working with young winemaker Franco Bernabei on his second vintage at Selvapiana, created this special wine to be a long-aging benchmark of the best of Rùfina's and Selvapiana's Sangiovese. The wine is not a blend, as is normal with Chianti, but rather is pure Sangiovese to show that variety without any adornment by other blending components. First produced in 1979, Bucerchiale is made in only the best vintages.

2020 Poliziano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

95% Prugnolo Gentile, 5% Colorino, Canaiolo, and Merlot

Now in the hands of the third generation, this estate began in 1961 when Montepulciano native Dino Carletti, acquired his first parcel of 22 hectares planted with Prugnolo Gentile (a clone of Sangiovese), which characterizes the wines of the region. The estate continues with the most attentive care to express the full potential of their territory so rich wine history. This wine is a perfect representation of the marriage between land and vine that Italians care so much for. It is medium+ concentration of garnet with a salmon rim showing development. It has notes of ripe and dried red fruit—cherry, red berries, and plums, with a hint of orange peel, spice, and abundance of earthiness reminiscent of dried forest floor and dried leaves. On the palate it is bone dry with medium body, medium+ fine tannins, and medium+ crisp acidity—all beautifully in balance with the earthy and savory red fruit finish that’s cohesive and lingering on the palate.

2020 Montenidoli, Il Garrulo, Colli Senesi Chianti

Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Trebbiano, Malvasia

Montenidoli is literally and figuratively a mountain above the appellation of San Gimignano. It is a large estate of roughly 200 hectares, though just 24 hectares under vine. Elisabetta Fagiuoli is pivotal figure in Tuscan winemaking, making highly appreciated terroir-driven wines for over 50 years. In 1965 she fell in love with the Montenidoli estate which she was able to purchase with the help of some money from her grandmother. The estate, both the vineyards and olive groves were in total disrepair. She began working towards restoring the property to its former glory. We are extremely lucky to have her wines here and perhaps more than any wine in this set, it speaks to us about how something so simple and so natural can be so beautiful. We recommend 30-45 minutes in a decanter to unveil the essence of this bright, fresh, earthy, spiced red fruit, beautiful wine. Enjoy with tomato-sauced dishes!

2017 Querce Seconda, Chianti Classico

100% Sangiovese

A small, organic estate in the northernmost corner of Chianti Classico, an area noted for producing wines with an alluring freshness. The estate covers 45 hectares of untouched forests, olive orchards, and naturally farmed vineyards. Niccolo Bernabei is the second generation of his winemaking family, and along with his wife, Linda, they are devoted to using only Sangiovese in their wines. The couple put a lot of effort into maintaining their soils in order to make sure the vines express the terroir of the area. These vines are 50 years old, farmed organically, and hand-harvested. The wine is fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel, then aged for 12 moths in a combination of 500-liter barrels and 10-year-old, 2000-liter French oak tonneau. This classic Chianti shows incredible depth of flavor, structure, and class, with a beautifully harmonious aroma; complex with notes of red fruit, currant, plum, spice, light balsamic, and eucalyptus. The palate reconfirms these characteristics along with a remarkable structure of integrated tannins, acidity, and a long, well-balanced finish.
