2016 Selvapiana, Bucerchiale, Chianti Rufina Riserva

100% Sangiovese

Bucerchiale is Selvapiana's flagship wine, a Riserva-level Chianti Rùfina crafted from the grapes of the estate's best vineyard, Bucerchiale. Francesco Giuntini, working with young winemaker Franco Bernabei on his second vintage at Selvapiana, created this special wine to be a long-aging benchmark of the best of Rùfina's and Selvapiana's Sangiovese. The wine is not a blend, as is normal with Chianti, but rather is pure Sangiovese to show that variety without any adornment by other blending components. First produced in 1979, Bucerchiale is made in only the best vintages.

2020 Poliziano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

95% Prugnolo Gentile, 5% Colorino, Canaiolo, and Merlot

Now in the hands of the third generation, this estate began in 1961 when Montepulciano native Dino Carletti, acquired his first parcel of 22 hectares planted with Prugnolo Gentile (a clone of Sangiovese), which characterizes the wines of the region. The estate continues with the most attentive care to express the full potential of their territory so rich wine history. This wine is a perfect representation of the marriage between land and vine that Italians care so much for. It is medium+ concentration of garnet with a salmon rim showing development. It has notes of ripe and dried red fruit—cherry, red berries, and plums, with a hint of orange peel, spice, and abundance of earthiness reminiscent of dried forest floor and dried leaves. On the palate it is bone dry with medium body, medium+ fine tannins, and medium+ crisp acidity—all beautifully in balance with the earthy and savory red fruit finish that’s cohesive and lingering on the palate.

2020 Montenidoli, Il Garrulo, Colli Senesi Chianti

Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Trebbiano, Malvasia

Montenidoli is literally and figuratively a mountain above the appellation of San Gimignano. It is a large estate of roughly 200 hectares, though just 24 hectares under vine. Elisabetta Fagiuoli is pivotal figure in Tuscan winemaking, making highly appreciated terroir-driven wines for over 50 years. In 1965 she fell in love with the Montenidoli estate which she was able to purchase with the help of some money from her grandmother. The estate, both the vineyards and olive groves were in total disrepair. She began working towards restoring the property to its former glory. We are extremely lucky to have her wines here and perhaps more than any wine in this set, it speaks to us about how something so simple and so natural can be so beautiful. We recommend 30-45 minutes in a decanter to unveil the essence of this bright, fresh, earthy, spiced red fruit, beautiful wine. Enjoy with tomato-sauced dishes!

2019 Tenuta Buon Tempo, Rosso di Montalcino

100% Sangiovese Grosso

Located in the extreme south of the Montalcino zone, surrounded by the Tuscan Anti-Apennines mountains and by the Orcia river, and the hill of Montalcino. Their flagship Brunello di Montalcino is getting most of the wine press, but these great vintages, such as in 2019 and 2020, the Rossos di Montalcino, known as "baby Brunello," can be an exceptional finds for great everyday Italian wines. It’s bright with medium+ concentration of ruby and notes of ripe red cherries, red plums, a hint of clementines, spice, and red florals underpin the mushroomy earthines. There’s a depth of these flavors and balanced medium+ structure and freshness across the palate. It’s ready to drink now and capable of aging a few more years as well.

2019 Tua Rita, Rosso dei Notri, Toscana

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc

In 1984 Rita and Virgilio realized their lifelong dream of purchasing the property that became Tua Rita. The original two hectares of vineyards have been cultivated meticulously since the beginning, and holdings now comprise 30 hectares. Their top wines are among the most acclaimed in Italy. Guests on this Spring’s Tuscany Trip will enjoy their top-tier wines while having dinner in their vineyards. On our website, you’ll find some of their premium wines in a 2-bottle set. This wine is their “entry-level” and a good introduction to how fantastic their wines are. The wine is medium+ garnet and beautifully aromatic with notes of savory dark fruit—plums, currants, cherries, and berries mingled with stewed tomatoes, pepper, eucalyptus, dark baking spices, and dried earth. It is bone-dry, rich, layered, and full-bodied, with high fine-grained tannins and medium-plus acidity. De-licious! P.S we have two of their premium Syrah wines available as well.

2019 Il Borro, Borrigiano, Val d’Arno di Sopra

40% Merlot, 35% Syrah, 25% Sangiovese

Established more than one thousand years ago, the estate has been home to some of Europe’s noblest families. Today it is owned by the fashion house Ferragamo. No, it does not come with a pair of shoes. What it does come with, for us at least, is a deepening appreciation for Merlot and Syrah grown in certain Tuscan geographies. This wine is delicious, a good value, and a great choice for a casual Tuesday night Italian red. It’s medium+ concentration ruby and aromatically “pretty” with notes of ripe red plum, berry, and cherry, with anise and savory wild herbs. It’s dry and smooth and delicious on the palate with medium body, medium+ and smooth tannins, and medium+ acidic freshness.
